Pirate Boy

A pirate party was the theme for this four year old’s birthday party. A perfect way to document his favorite things at this age.

Tiny Ballet Dancer

She was done dancing and became interested in the traffic outside. I just love the story told here. I added an artistic technique to give it a bit of a painterly feel to the image.

Precious Sights
Posted by: | CommentsFun Photo Friday
“One of life’s most precious sights is that of a newborn baby, expecially when that newborn baby is your own. Despite our exhaustion, my husband and I made it a priority to come in and photograph all four of our children. Photographing our little bundles of joy was the best decision we ever made. No matter how quickly they may grow up, we will always have these pictures to cherish!” Jill
My Favorite Age
Posted by: | CommentsFun Photo Friday
Three and four year olds are my favorite ages, as you may already know. I love their cartoon voices, their questions, the funny things they say. This four year old shared the complete range of expressions with me. I have had the privilage of photographing him since he was a baby and today he brought his three month old sister, who also did great.
I absolutely love his lonely, quite face,to his full out, uninhibited joyfulness.
I am so lucky to get to be a part of so many families!

Conversations in Fairyland

Twins’ Conversations in Fairyland
I don’t think I have ever laughed this much in a photo session. These five year old twins have such a great imagination and their mom is so good at pretending with them and asking great questions for them to entertain me with of course! Actually the kinds of questions she asks not only kept the girls in character but gave them something to respond to and hold their interest. The image above is going to be a wonderful canvas wall portrait.
”If you were a fairy, what would your name be?” Mom asked.
“Red Rose!” Kate said without a hesitation.
Mom had another great followup question, “And what is your job as a fairy?”
“To make the flowers bloom in the spring!”
“And Erin, what is your fairy name?”
“GOD!”
Okay by now, I was laughing so much, I wondered if the photographs were going to be sharp. We all thought we heard her say “God”, but we wondered if we really did, so Mom asked to clarify that. “I’m sorry honey, I didn’t hear you,” she said. “Garden Fairy!” was the corrected reply. Well after we composed ourselves, mom asked what her fairy job was.
“To make the flowers grow quickly!”
Another cool thing mom Annette did to get the girls to hold still was to ask them to tell the little fairies in the tree house a secret wish. They had to repeat it five times in a row-that kept them still for me. Red Rose’s secret wish was for a wolf from Build a Bear (even though her sister reminded her that she already had one). Garden Fairy wished for a pony. How cute is that? Oh, in one photograph you could see her fingers sticking out as she was keeping track of the count.

Armfuls in Stereo

It is so exciting to see babies only weeks old, especially twins! I typically get babies in the studio at three months. That is really fun too but there is something so amazing to me about the frail, smallness of a newborn. These two are only fourteen days old in these images.

Children Do the Cutest Things

This image of Elizabeth was so precious that the Ozark Christian newspaper used it as a feature image about prayer.

These twins are such a delight in “Belly Inspection”. I have photographed them since their mom’s maternity portrait.

I love the fact that the background is a watercolor done by Jacey herself! It adds a personal touch to a warm and fun image of this young artist.

Twister and Polka Dots
Posted by: | Comments
This little gal always has such great expressions. She smiles easily too!
I can hear it now, “But Barb, you let her wear polka dots!” You may remember that I always tell you to select solid colors not stripes, plaids, or dots. Having simple clothes keeps the attention on face of the subject. That is still true! This image works because the dots are pretty soft and I think the circles on the floor work well with it. But don’t go crazy on me!
I just love this face!
Kids do great things if you don’t try to over coach them. They respond better to songs, funny stories, or silly signs behind the photographer. Of course that depends on their age.

Farthest Traveling Family

I am honored to have these gorgeous girls come back to Marion from their new home in Rochester to see me at least once a year. One of the downsides of a studio (and many careers really) is that people move after I have grown so attached to them. So it is such a treat to get to see these gals and their parents! Thanks again for coming.
